Hammam in Marrakech: Which Type to Choose and at What Price

Local hammam, riad hammam or hotel spa: the three worlds, how a session unfolds, the customs to know and the budgets to expect in Marrakech.

Hammams in Marrakech: at a glance

  1. Three worlds coexist: the neighbourhood hammam (€1 to €5), the riad hammam (€35 to €70), which often offers the best value for money) and the hotel spa (€90 and above).
  2. The session always follows the same ritual: hot room, black soap, exfoliation with a kessa glove, ghassoul clay, rest and mint tea.
  3. Main customs: swimwear is compulsory, respect the single-sex time slots of traditional hammams and bring your own kit to a neighbourhood establishment. Late afternoon remains the most pleasant moment.

The hammam is a must-do experience during a stay in Morocco. It is not simply a spa; it is a public bath and a neighbourhood institution where people wash and chat. In Marrakech, three worlds coexist — the popular hammam, the riad hammam and the hotel spa — with very different levels of comfort and budgets. Here is how to choose, what to expect during a session, and the customs to know to enjoy the moment with peace of mind.

Three worlds, three different experiences

The neighbourhood hammam

Every district of the medina has its own, often backing onto the traditional bread oven that heats it. You come with your own things (black soap, kessa glove, towel, sandals) and wash yourself, in vaulted rooms that get progressively hotter. The women’s and men’s time slots are separate and vary from one establishment to another: check them before setting off.

Entry usually costs €1 to €3, to which the price of an exfoliation carried out by a member of staff may be added. It is the most authentic and the most exotic experience, provided you are comfortable with communal spaces: here there is no private cabin, no background music and no fluffy towel. A word of Arabic or French is enough to make yourself understood, and the welcome is generally curious and kindly.

The riad hammam

This is the intermediate option most often chosen by visitors: a private or semi-private steam room in a courtyard house in the medina, with black soap exfoliation, a ghassoul wrap, a cleansing clay, then an argan oil massage. The session lasts one hour to one hour thirty.

Reckon on €35 to €70 per person. This style of hammam is the best value for money in its category: you find the gestures of the traditional hammam with the added privacy and comfort. Book the day before, or even two to three days ahead in high season.

The hotel spa

In Guéliz, the Hivernage and the Palmeraie, hotel spas offer this Moroccan ritual as part of a wider menu of beauty and wellness treatments. The setting is particularly refined, the products often high-end and access to the pool sometimes included for the day. Reckon on €90 and above for a complete ritual.

The difference with a riad hammam lies above all in the setting, the duration and the service rather than in the treatment itself. It is the right option for a full relaxation day, or when you are staying far from the medina. In high season, remember to check availability for a treatment.

How a session unfolds

📷 The kessa glove exfoliation, the most vigorous step of the ritual.

The principle stays much the same from one establishment to another. You first pass through a warm room to open the pores, then the hot room where you stay for ten to fifteen minutes. Next comes the black soap, an olive paste that is left to work, then the exfoliation with the kessa glove. This step, quite energetic, often comes as a surprise on a first session.

Then come the rinse with water, the possible application of ghassoul to the hair and body, then a rest period and, depending on the package, a massage. The session ends with a mint tea.

Two tips: plan nothing demanding in the two hours that follow, as the effect is relaxing to the point of being sometimes overwhelming; and drink plenty, as dehydration is real after an hour in the heat.

The customs to know

  • What to wear: keep a swimsuit bottom or underwear on. Full nudity is not customary, even in neighbourhood hammams.
  • Mixed use: traditional hammams are never mixed. Riad hammams and spas offer private cabins or couples‘ time slots.
  • The kit: provided in riads and spas, to be brought to neighbourhood hammams (black soap, glove, towel, plastic sandals and a dry change of clothes).
  • The tip: it is appreciated after an exfoliation or a massage; a few euros are enough.
  • Photos: to be avoided in a neighbourhood hammam, as it is a place of intimacy.

How much to budget

Type District Budget per person Logistical tips
Neighbourhood hammam Medina €1 to €5 with exfoliation Bring your own kit, check the men’s/women’s times
Riad hammam Medina €35 to €70 Book the day before, 1 hr to 1 hr 30, everything provided
Hotel spa Guéliz, Hivernage, Palmeraie €90 and above Book several days ahead, plan for the taxi journey

The mid-range is the one that suits the greatest number of people. That said, the neighbourhood hammam deserves to be tried at least once: for the price of a coffee, it is one of the rare moments of a stay when you share a daily custom with local people.

When to go

The best time is late afternoon, between 4 pm and 7 pm: the session falls after the sightseeing, before dinner which is taken late, and you come out just as the city cools down. From June to September, it is also the only reasonable time slot: a hammam in the full heat of the afternoon is difficult.

In winter, the hammam takes on another meaning: the houses of the medina are cool and poorly heated, and an hour of humid heat does a great deal of good. It is the season when local people go the most.

Finally, Friday is a day of high attendance in traditional hammams, a day of prayer and family couscous. If you are looking for more calm, choose another day instead or ask about the least busy times.

With children

In neighbourhood hammams, children traditionally accompany their parents from a very young age. For a visiting family, the heat remains trying before the age of seven or eight. Ask beforehand about the minimum age, the conditions of admission and the possibility of cutting the session short; spas sometimes offer shorter treatments suited to children.

Bring water and leave the room immediately if the child struggles with the heat.

After the hammam, discovering the city at a gentle pace

After a hammam, the urge to explore the city on foot is rarely there. Marrakech Insiders’ Marrakech Night Ride lets you carry on the evening effortlessly: this private 1 hr 30 side-car ride crosses in particular the Hivernage, the surroundings of Jemaa el-Fna and the medina at nightfall, with a street food stop.

If you prefer to set off earlier, the Essential Ride offers, in 1 hr 30, a customisable itinerary between the historic medina, Guéliz and the Palmeraie. The Secret Ride delves deeper into these three faces of Marrakech over 3 hours, with a route tailored to your interests and your pace.

Each side-car takes one to two passengers with a private Insider who speaks French, English, Spanish or Arabic. The tours and their prices are detailed here. For a practical question about availability or times, WhatsApp remains the quickest.
