———-
This ride will take you through three distinct areas of Marrakech – each unique, yet each integral to the existence and flavor of the city today: the Palmeraie, Gueliz and the Medina.
Formerly a fertile oasis, the vast expanse of the Palmeraie was vital to the entire surrounding area for its growth and survival. Here, you’ll learn about the ancient irrigation systems that made this possible, as well as riding past the grandeur of the estates that give the area its current nickname of the ‘Beverly Hills of Marrakech.’ You may also choose to visit* an astonishing private collection of vintage cars from the 1920s right through to the 1980s. Some of these are incredibly rare, and each has its own unique history. Alternatively, stop for a refreshing mint tea in the medina.
Despite the modern pace and appearance of Guéliz, with its internationally recognized brands, diverse expat community, and range of restaurants and bars, the ‘New Town’ of Marrakech has a history just as fascinating, if not as long, as the Palmeraie and Medina. Traces of the French Protectorate, which defined Marrakech from the early 20th century, are still in evidence here but also in a wealth of Art Deco facades and glamorous relics, such as the city’s first cinema and hotel.
Entering one of the 20-plus gates of the Medina after witnessing the modern-day opulence of the Palmeraie and the contemporary bustle of Gueliz, you feel more than ever that you have stepped back into another time. Winding around tight corners, you’ll pass by inhabitants of the medina living according to their traditions, and engaging in commercial and artisanal activities designed for the life of the community, rather than for tourism. Your Insider can explain to you the ancient significance of the Kasbah, as well as the Mellah, once a Jewish neighborhood. You may also wish to visit the flea market in Bab El Khemis where local life mingles with the opportunity to purchase unexpected, and largely second-hand, treasures. The mysteries of the tanners’ district or the miracles performed by the saints venerated by the city’s residents will be revealed to you.
Also, a short break in a traditional riad or at the edge of a table in a busy street to taste the local flavors* will allow you to recharge your batteries.
*additional fee applies
